Engine is the heart of an automobile. Every car enthusiast would agree to the fact that engines make a considerable difference to car’s performance. Efficiency of petrol cars has always been questioned against the efficiency and performance of diesel cars. Every car owner has his or her own preference and reason for selecting petrol or a diesel car. For those who are still contemplating on the choice of car engine, here is a comprehensive comparison between the two types of engines while planning to buy car.
Fuel Efficiency: It goes without saying that diesel engines offer greater fuel efficiency as compared to their petrol counter parts. Engines that run on diesel have shown 40% more fuel efficiency as compared to cars that run on petrol. Diesel cars prove to be economical in the long run in terms of fuel consumption. Even, some of the car manufacturers like Tata Motors have over 80% of the sales contributed by diesel engines in India.
Speed: Petrol cars display greater speed as compared to the diesel counter parts. Petrol cars have light weight engines. This allows them to garner higher speed. Many consumers may reject diesel cars on account of their overall speed.
Ignition: Petrol cars run on spark ignition system where a spark plug ignites the premixed fuel and air. Diesel cars, on the other hand, use compression combustion to start the vehicle. Compression combustion refers to the process where fuel is infused into highly compressed combustion chamber. This does not require a spark plug to ignite the fuel.
Turbo charging: Petrol cars do not respond significantly to turbo charging. Diesel engines, on the other hand, can be turbo charged with greater efficiency thanks to their compression ratio.
Fuel Efficiency when engine is idle: Diesel cars tend to provide better fuel efficiency when the engine is idle. Petrol cars, on the other hand, may suffer from low fuel efficiency due to the butterfly valve. Butterfly valve shuts down when the engine goes on idle mode. This impacts the throttle system of petrol cars thereby decreasing their fuel efficiency.
Maintenance: Petrol engines are easy to maintain. They are cost effective as compared to the engines that run on diesel. Diesel engines demand intensive care and rigorous maintenance schedules for long life and optimum performance.
Environmental Factor: If you love nature and are conscious to make the environment clean. Without a thought, it has to be Petrol cars. Diesel engines are more polluting compared to petrol engines.
Higher Surcharge Cost: Diesel cars are costly not only in the basic ex-showroom price but also the registration costs are higher in some cities. For example, Delhi, the capital city of India has higher registration surcharge of 25% on Diesel cars as compared to Petrol cars.
Considering the above mentioned factors, both the engines have their own set of pros and cons. Consumers who love speed, high performance and light weight cars would prefer engines that run on petrol. Consumers concerned with fuel efficiency and longevity of the car would ideally settle down with the diesel cars.
